Aaron Uhlemann - A Broken Life Restored
“I am a 31 year old man born and bred in Dublin. I had a good upbringing and wanted for nothing, yet inside me I was always looking for that something more. In my curiosity I stated to smoke hash when I was 14. This satisfied for a while until I was officered speed and I made a terrible mistake taking it, for as a result my life really started to spin out of control. I quickly progressed through the ranks in drugs and soon found myself smoking and injecting heroin.
For 10 years I was totally bound to drugs and the lifestyle that is associated with drugs abuse. All through that journey I felt there was no way of escape, it was a horrific experience. I tried everything I knew to try and break this habit and lifestyle yet nothing worked for me.
However I got a social worker when I was put on a methadone program as it was his job to keep tabs on me. I had been going to him for 2 years and one day he told me the only person that could help me was Jesus Christ. I took this with a pinch of salt and thought he was off his head. One thing though that struck me and I still remember was his sincerity.
Next time I visited him we spoke again and he suggested an 8 week rehab programme but I never went. Then he mentioned Teen Challenge and I was not interested as it was a whole year programme. He said what is 1 year out of the rest of your life and that got me thinking. I considered it and eventually applied and a few months later I was in Teen Challenge. During my time there I decided to give this Jesus a bash, and I have never looked back since.
From there I Went to New York to do an internship in Metro Ministries a children's ministry run by Bill Wilson. They finished up offering me a job and I stayed there for nearly four years. While there I met my beautiful wife Ina who was a staff member and following our marriage, together we now have a beautiful daughter Aaliyah.
I now live in Scotland and work in Teen Challenge Sunnybrae with men who are struggling with some of the same things I have now overcome. It is nearly 7 years since I came off drugs completely and I have never looked back.”
