WHO WE ARE

For fifty years Teen Challenge has been working internationally to bring hope to hurting disadvantaged people; young and old alike.

Teen Challenge began in 1958 by Rev. David Wilkerson responding to his belief that God had called him to help a gang of youths on trial for murder. He walked around Brooklyn, New York and found an appalling high rate of drug and alcohol abuse amongst the young people he met and decided he wanted to make a difference. His story is told in the book, ‘The Cross and the Switchblade’.

Now Teen Challenge is working in nearly 100 countries and is one of the world’s largest drug and alcohol outreaches. There is approaching 10,000 people in Teen Challenge programmes around the world today. It has combined Christian concern and social action in a very proactive way.

WHAT WE DO

At Sunnybrae we offer a twelve month residential programme for young men between 18 and 35 years of age who are searching for the answers to their life controlling problems, especially drug and/or alcohol addictions. The structured programme is based on Christian principles and is finely balanced between the classroom and practical skills such as cooking, bricklaying, carpentry, painting and decorating, gardening, plumbing, electrical and administration. All activities are supervised by trained and competent staff.

HOW WE DO IT

The goal of Teen Challenge is to return a person back to society free from their addictions spiritually, emotionally and physically whole. This is achieved by helping and encouraging the resident to change the way he thinks about himself, about others and life in general.
